Tár: 158 minutes of rambling from an angry mediocre white man speaking through a white lesbian conductor

Tár is the result of a society that rewards mediocre white men with opportunities to create films. Todd Field, writer, director, and producer of the film, comes off cowardly, angry, wanting to mock “BIPOC Pangender” people, ignore race/racism, abuse power in a #MeToo era, and spew out racist ideas without consequences. Tár is poorly paced, edited, at least 75 minutes too long, and is only carried by Cate Blanchett, the fact they actually used professional musicians (except for the first violinist), and the cinematography.

I can’t read Todd Field’s mind, and don’t know him personally, but I’ve listened to 3 interviews from him and he’s said nothing substantial, or interesting, which is not surprising considering he wrote this awful film. He consistently comes off cowardly by not stating his opinions but talks about how this film is the result of years and years of a buildup of “questions” and “things [he’s] been thinking about” in his mind. I’ve had tens of thousands of interactions with white people through my life to know what that means.

The fact that this film (and Top Gun) is nominated as Best Picture at the Oscars, is embarrassing. Everything Everywhere All At Once, doing multiple genres extremely well, being nominated alongside so many examples of white mediocrity, showcases how much better people of color have to be to get the same amount of recognition as white people.
