why you should watch Beef on Netflix

this was written prior to learning about David Choe’s horrible rape story from his 2014 podcast episode, which he claims was a fabricated story. I begin to examine that here:

Lee Sung Jin’s Beef on Netflix is one of the best shows I’ve watched. It’s another example of the ingenuity of writers/actors of color being able to produce compelling, novel, heart wrenching, hilarious, complex, and universal work, and it deserves many awards. It’s brilliant with its writing, performances, and execution.

It does what Issa Rae’s Insecure does well: presents complex, flawed, and very human characters. It’s great to see this complexity. So many white writers write people of color characters to be one dimensional and background to a white protagonist’s journey, although co-writer Daniel Scheinert (white), along with co-writer Daniel Kwan, from Everything Everywhere All At Once showed that it’s possible for a white writer to write 3 dimensional complex poc characters if they actually put in effort and try to be empathetic.

There were so many moments during the show where I was saying to myself “noooooo,” “whyyyyyyy,” and “whaaaaaaat are you doing???” Every character is frustrating yet you root for them simultaneously. They’re self destructive…
